CybersexStatement

The Cybersex Benefit show raised some concerns about the appropriateness of a sex theme for an anti-corporate, anti-fascist, pro-women's rights radio project like KillRadio.

The statements below address these concerns. Comments are welcome.

  1. Sex in the media is under attack by right-wing "decency" groups, who are turning the clock back on america's social evolution-- sexual content is therefor a political statement by an anti-censorship media group like ours.
  2. Fact is, much killradio programming (by female DJ's in particular) is already daringly and glaringly sexual.
  3. The event was not intended to be an opportunity for men to gawk at half-naked chicks-- the vibe was burning man, goth, and costumey, not a girlie show. Both men and women dressed in freaky attire.
  4. The sexual gaze need not oppress women. Men can appreciate female sex energy without abusing or disrespecting anyone. Evolved men can lust and respect women at the same time.
  5. Sex IS a context for physical and socio-economic oppression of women by men in some societies. That's unacceptable. But sex can be a healthy, positive thing. Demonizing male sexuality, as some feminists do, does not promote social evolution. It only produces hypocrisy by men, who hide their sexuality in a desperate effort not to be considered sexist. It also creates hypocrisy among women, who naturally love sex too. It's just not realistic to demonize that which is natural-- instead, we should encourage dialog and enlightenment, not repression. Let's reclaim sexuality from the abusers, and make it a positive thing.
  6. Cultured people can, in my view, enjoy sex-play which includes faux S&M, B&D, etc. This is mutual fantasy & theater of the personal. It's very different than institutionalized oppression. A simplistic or inexperienced perspective might not see the difference. Often in sex, even of the non-theatrical variety, there can be a letting go, making one's self utterly vulnerable, maybe even controlled by one's partner. This can be an expression of giving, of fantasy, or love. Abusive people exploit this. But enlightened people do not turn this into real abuse, they respect it-- they are able to make a distinction between mutually agreed on sexual vulnerability, and abusiveness.
  7. A woman's No means No, and that should be respected. But also, a woman's Yes means Yes. That should be respected too. In other words, we also reject the far right's (and far left's) demonization of female sexual desire.
  8. Fascists and hypocrites always try to control and repress people's sexuality. Sexual expression can therefor be an act against fascism and hypocrisy.
